Abstract

A motorcycle headlight beam loses its correct direction during braking, acceleration, and cornering, since pitch and roll motion are not compensated by a fixed headlight. Existing adaptive front-lighting systems solve this using mechanical actuators, which add cost and can wear out over time. This paper presents a low-cost, solid-state alternative: a laboratory proof-of-concept that measures motorcycle orientation using an inertial measurement unit and converts roll and pitch into a symbolic beam response shown on individually controllable LED rings. Three orientation estimation methods were implemented and compared, and a Complementary filter was selected as the practical default. Static tests showed close agreement between applied and measured angles across }30◦, dynamic roll tracking remained stable, while dynamic pitch tracking was more sensitive to motion. These results show that the proposed solid-state approach is technically feasible for adaptive beam stabilisation.
